Payson, AZ, August 8, 2018: This week Payson Unified School District received notification from Google that the District was named a Google for Education Reference District. Payson Unified School District is only the third district in the state to receive this recognition. Around the globe there are only 234 individual schools or districts recognized by Google as Reference schools or Reference Districts.

Google for Education Reference Districts are school districts that demonstrate excellence and thought leadership through the innovative use of technology, including G Suite for Education (formerly known as Google Apps for Education) and Chromebooks, to drive impact and positive learning outcomes. Google approached the District with a request for the District to apply for this prestigious recognition due to our robust adoption of Chromebooks and G Suite for Education tools to support and enhance teaching and learning. The district is now considered one of the “Googliest” education institutions in the world. The District’s application focused on our work around innovation in the classroom practices, staff development and community engagement.

Payson Unified School District embarked on the move to the Google platform and Chromebooks in 2014. The move was designed to help the District utilize technology as a framework for educating our students and utilize cost effective methods to move the District to a 1:1 computing ratio in the classroom.

Dr. Greg Wyman, Superintendent, is very appreciative of the hard work of staff and in particular the technology department to accomplish this goal. He said, “The Technology Department, under the leadership of Mrs. Victoria Andrews, has created a forward thinking and innovative vision for the District. This award demonstrates the success of our efforts and positions the District to continue to influence education at the state, national and global level.”

Mrs. Victoria Andrews said, “The result of this vision is that our students and staff are utilizing the latest technologies in thoughtful and innovative ways that are embedded in the education process. As a rural community, we harness the power of technology to bring the world to our students and to bring our students to the world. Technological, collaborative and critical thinking skills will only continue to grow in importance for our students”.

A core value of the District is innovation and the District’s strategic plan has a goal specifically dedicated to technology. This recognition is validation for the District’s technology vision and the innovative educational practices used throughout the district.
